Leadership Benchmarks

5th grade Benchmark:

The students in year one of the Leadership Map will develop a greater sense of awareness of the world around them.  During this year, students will practice observation skills as they learn how to record their impressions of what they see, hear, and experience through written word and basic drawing.  Students will also understand that observation requires hearing as well as seeing.  They will show what it means to be an attentive listener in both their public as well as personal settings by giving eye contact and interacting appropriately.

6th grade Benchmark:

The students in year two of the Leadership Map will understand that they are part of a larger community that requires a proficiency in social etiquette and personal refinement.  During this year, students will build upon their observation and awareness skills from year one, to better understand the appropriate actions for specific social settings.  Students will understand how to adjust their language and actions when interacting with others in a variety of settings.  They will demonstrate their understanding of how place, timing and company determine acceptable behavior.

7th grade Benchmark:

In year three of the Leadership Map, students will draw from the skills and habits practiced in the first two years as they create a plan to become Models of Active Participation.  They will begin by reflecting upon the role models in their own lives.  They will explore how many kinds of behavior may be healthy or harmful.  Students will assess the qualities of their personal mentors and will use these models to practice positive interactions with family, friends, and with the 5th grade students.  Students will reflect upon the concept of “stewardship” and demonstrate the levels of responsibility required to care for others and the resources of their world.

8th grade Benchmark:

In the final year of the Leadership Map, students will explore how they can make a difference in their personal world.  By utilizing awareness, attentive listening, and appropriate social skills, students will identify what they can do to improve the conditions around them and initiate action to make these improvements a reality.  Students will reflect upon the concept of “integrity” and demonstrate how this becomes a guiding value in their daily lives as they face personal challenges and take action to make a positive contribution in their numerous communities.
